Leaving your 9 to 5: Taking the first step
Are you stuck in a 9 to 5 job that you loathe? Are you sick of the grind and ready to leave the corporate lifestyle? Most importantly, are you tired of working your tush off for someone ELSE’S dream? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it may be time to quit your 9-5
I know because this was me back in 2019. This was the year that I came to the realization that I was done in corporate America. I was willing and ready for more. Far more than I knew my old company could ever give me.
We are meant for MORE than the 9 to 5 limitations!
I won’t bore you with all the details of my career past, we’d be here a while. But what I will say is that in 2014, I left an amazing career for more flexibility and less travel, ultimately allowing me more time with my 8 month old, and shortly thereafter, his little brother. My priorities changed and that’s OK.
I worked for the new company for over 6 years and while I excelled, I soon realized that I would never truly be “seen” at this company.
What do I mean by that?
I mean that no matter what I did, things were still status quo, hu-hum, BORE. The company’s focus was purely external and minimally internal. My wake up call started brewing in October of 2018 with my breaking point coming in February 2019.
The CEO of the company blamed me for a huge mistake that she was actually responsible for. And that was it.
I was done. Ready for a change. I knew I could offer more.
Signs that it’s time to leave
Hindsight is 20/20 but prior to this breaking point, there were SO many signs, pointing me in the opposite direction. Here are some signs that you may be experiencing also, indicating that it’s time to finally throw in the towel where you are:
- You have the “Sunday Scaries” – that dread in your gut every Sunday that you have to go back to work on Monday
- You feel depleted and exhausted every single day
- You spend your time brainstorming other ways to make money so you can finally leave
- You have no time for what truly matters in your life, i.e. family, kids, traveling, cooking, reading, etc.
- You’re overworked and underpaid
- You crave a slower pace of life, actual work life balance and a career that works around your life – NOT the other way around
If you’ve had even just a few of these thoughts, it’s time. But instead of letting them bring you down, let them be your main driver to succeed at something new!
So, you’re there. Now what?
When you’re in this stage, it can feel overwhelming. Trust me, I’ve been there! So many options, so much information online, it’s hard to know where to start.
So I brought it back to the basics with a list. I mean, who doesn’t love a good list?! Grab some pen, paper and a cup of coffee and start with this list:
- DECIDE to make a change. know that sounds simple, but putting it out in the Universe has power. You can sign up for all the webinars and free trainings, but until you actually DECIDE to make a change, you’ll inevitably stay stuck.
- My favorite: grab pen and paper and make a list of all the things that you’re GREAT at, plus all the things that you LOVE to do. What lights you up? What can you do better than other people?
- Bonus: to your list, add the things you WANT – your main drivers for making a change to begin with
If you’re anything like me, after you make that list, you’ll inevitably see a theme:)
My list led me to a service-based business of Pinterest Ads management. Here’s a picture of my actual list from February 28, 2019!
Do you see a theme?? Shoot me a note on IG and let me know!!
Start researching. Take to Pinterest or Google and find all you can. Nothing is off limits!
In your research, you may have read or learned something that completely turned you off. Or, the opposite may have happened. You were researching one thing which totally shifted the direction you thought you were going (this is what happened to me). Go with it. Keep following the path until you land on what is you know you want to do to help you leave your 9-5.
Have you thought about Pinterest?
If you’re new here, I’m Erica. Pinterest Ads Expert and Mentor. Probably should’ve led off with that:) As I mentioned above, my research led me (inadvertently) to Pinterest management, and eventually Pinterest ads management.
And in the spirit of service, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you about the business that changed my life forever.
I started as a Pinterest Manager in 2019, while still working full time in my 9-5. I quickly landed 3 clients and within about 5 months, I was able to leave my job (Covid may have also given me the push 🙂).
It wasn’t until last year that I took a hard look at my business to see where the most profit was coming from. And I was completely shocked to see that it wasn’t from my monthly organic management clients. It was from my Pinterest Ads Management clients!
Because of the way the algorithm works on Pinterest, managing ads takes a bit less time each week than consistent organic management. What’s more is that because managing ads is a premium service, that means you can also charge a premium!
Once I realized all this, I niched into only offering Pinterest Ads management and in doing so, last year I was able to take 45 days of vacation with my family, and better yet, my business made the most money it ever had! This is what happens when you double down on what’s working!
Because providing this service has allowed for the flexibility, time freedom, travel and ability to be there for my kids more than ever, I want to share it with the world! The other women and moms out there who are stuck just like I was 4 years ago.
